The recruiting and onboarding process can be long and stressful, and leaders should always try to make a smart decision so that the candidate fit in well with the position.

How can one know if someone is truly right for the role?

By following these strategies that can give a better preview of the outcomes of the decision:

Utilise Assessment Tests

Nowadays, there are a variety of ways to evaluate a candidate’s fit within an organisation.

There are a variety of tests that measure everything from a person’s intelligence level, skills and even personality traits.

It is extremely advantageous to provide an industry-based test making sure that the person actually knows what they claim to.

This will give you a detailed preview into the person’s level of expertise, and give you a better understanding of what they can contribute to the team.

In order to promote team collaboration and cohesion, personalities of colleagues must match.

As such, it is beneficial to distribute a personality test that will give you insight into a person’s traits.

Are they a leader or a follower? Are they an introvert or an extrovert? Do they value authority, or do they prefer independent work?

Getting answers to all of these questions can help you make a smart decision about whether a person will make a good addition to your existing team.

Ask Creative Questions

Most managers stick to the most common interview questions and mostly talk about the job at hand.

However, that doesn’t give you good insight about the person, their personality, character and communication style.

To get a better sense of this, spend some time asking creative and open-ended questions.

This will allow the person to think quickly on their feet and formulate thoughtful responses revealing their true personalities, problem solving abilities and creativity.

Conduct a Trial Run

Even if you spent hours completing a thorough interview and called the person’s references, it is still not enough to see the person in action within your department.

As such, the best way to see whether a person is right for the role is to give them a trial period within your team.

This can last anywhere from 1 week to 3 months, giving you and your existing employees a chance to see the person in action.

You can see how much they are able to accomplish with and without supervision, and how well they get along with the other team members.

If it is a good fit, you can hire the person on a permanent basis.

If it is not a good fit, then you’re not obligated to keep them on payroll, and can start a search for the next candidate.
