‘There isn’t enough time in the day’ is probably in the top three most used clichés by management globally.
There probably is enough time in the day – it’s more than likely that you are not making the best use of your time.
Here are 7 quick and efficient ways to ensure that you improve your time management:
Eliminate Distractions – Take all of the last working week and list everything that distracted you. Was it sifting through emails? Was it alerts from your mobile phone or your social media? On the list figure out ways to either eliminate or heavily reduce these distractions. This will require some willpower on your part to ensure you don’t get your head turned.
Get A Calendar – This can manage your daily activities so you know what has to be completed before the end of the day. Google Calendar is a great tool which can be synced on to all of your devices to track where your time is going and what tasks need to be completed.
Create A Daily Plan – Taking the ‘bull in a china shop’ approach with your daily tasks will leave a huge mess with your workload. Plan for what needs to be done and delegate work downwards for the less important tasks that don’t require your attention.
Say ‘No’ – ‘Yes’ men don’t get anything done. They’re too busy saying yes to every single question that is asked of them. Put that ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on the door and crack on with the things that really matter.
Have Breaks – If you try and cram all of your tasks back to back this will actually take you longer to complete. Grabbing some air, a quick glass of water and a quick step away from your work will keep you in the right frame of mind.
Cut Short Pointless Meetings – We’ve all been in those meetings that have hit the wall and aren’t going anywhere. Don’t be afraid to cut them short – they’re wasting your time. If you don’t cut them off you’ll never get out!
Make Deadlines & Stick To Them – It is all well and good making deadlines, however they are useless unless you stick to them. Set a deadline to complete a task and work to it. Mark these out clearly on your daily plan and your calendar so you know the allotted time for each task.
So there you have it, just 7 short adaptations you have to make to your work life to ensure you’re saving time. It’s better to make time fly when you’re having fun as opposed to not having enough hours in the day.
