Sean:
Where should I send a press release?

David:
Do not just send your release through an e-mail blast to every e-mail address you can find. Never send a release about a business issue to a sports writer, for example. Make sure your release goes only to the people who write about your topic.

If your release is about a local issue, send it to your local media. If
is a story that would be of interest to a regional or national market
then expand your distribution list.

If your release is about something your company has done in your
community, that makes it a local story. Even though your company might do business on a national basis the story is not national. Never send a local story to national reporters, just as you would not send a story about a business accomplishment to a movie critic.

If you are sending the release yourself you need to do some research to find contact information at the publications you wish to target. Building a good list is an on-going project that must be updated regularly as journalists come and go.
