HANDLING OTHER PEOPLE TACTICALLY (AND TACTFULLY)

If you do not get the expected reaction to your proposals then you must think on your feet. Here are some ideas to help you do this:

• Don't simply press on regardless; look and listen for signals of disagreement before they turn to aggression or resentment.
• Summarise your understanding of alternative points of view to clarify them if they appear confused. The others will usually appreciate being given time to think, too.
• Show firm but considerate (assertive) behaviour, don't become aggressive or resentful and don't cave in unless you really feel it is the right thing to do.
• Acknowledge when others are upset. Even though you don't agree with them, this often takes the heat out of the situation. Ignoring other people's frustration usually leads to increased tension or apathy, neither of which are helpful.
• If the chairperson doesn't summarise decisions and actions under one agenda item, do so yourself before the meeting moves on to the next item.
