THE BENEFITS

Business meetings are a forum for demonstrating to others your professionalism manager. And if they are run properly, your meetings can also provide cost-effective training for your team.

But what about the many more meetings you attend where someone else is in the chair? Perhaps, far from contributing to team spirit, many of these are tedious, irrelevant and thoroughly demotivating. The ideas outlined should help with spending less time in abortive meetings, to contribute more effectively when you need there and to influence other chairpersons to do a better job, too.

Get it right and you should find you call fewer meetings and attend fewer me chaired by others. But you should get more done, both in the meetings you do attend the time you will have saved! The outcomes of a well run meeting will include:

• High quality decisions or solutions.
• Effective implementation of strategies.
• Agreement on responsibilities or assignments.
• Generation of new ideas.
• Better understanding of new policies, new procedures, or other changes.
• Collaborative efforts.
• Effective Problem solving.
• A multi-party exchange of information.

Regular meetings, well run regular meetings, will help ensure that the team is making steady progress on the task. There are, however, situations when holding a meeting is neither efficient or a good use of team members' time.
