GIVING AND RECEIVING FEEDBACK

Feedback is extremely important. Without feedback, continuous improvement is halted, because the means of knowing what has to be improved, has been cut off. An effective manager strives to understand feedback and use it in the most constructive way possible to encourage greater performance.

TYPES OF FEEDBACK AND THE IMPACT OF EACH

There are a number of types of feedback:-

• Positive - giving praises for achievement. Positive feedback is very important, because it lets staff know they are doing things right and encourages them to continue.

• Negative - commenting on areas for improvement. Of equal importance to positive feedback, however, it must be handled in such a way as to lead to an improvement and enhanced commitment from the individual.

• Constructive - which can be both positive and negative. It must be supportive and look for ways of solving problems and making progress.

• Destructive - predominantly critical. Emphasises the negative and is unhelpful in making progress. Also often demotivational.
