Here are some useful tips on the key stages in running a successful coaching session: These are practical tips that are useful when following the earlier Coaching Model.

1. State the purpose and importance of the session - you need to be clear in your own mind about what you are trying to achieve before you begin.

2. Establish desired outcomes.

3. Give objective feedback. Ensure you pick up on any signals about how useful this is.

4. Identify the consequences of not addressing the problem or shortcoming.

5. Agree what the problem is and any resulting development needs.

6. Disclose your own feelings - demonstrate your faith in the person and your concern about the problem and the need to resolve it.

7. Seek suggestions for improvement. Explore what exactly is going wrong, and listen carefully - don't focus too much on whether what you are saying is right or not.

8. Build/clarify/discuss options. Ask questions, such as: 'Would it help to organise things differently?' or 'Are other people doing the same thing?' Don't only use questions that demonstrate your knowledge, or avoid questions to which you don't know the answer. Don't answer your own questions.

9. Agree development actions.

10. Check commitment.

11. Agree follow-up.
