PROVIDING CRITICAL FEEDBACK

If you need to be critical then the following list may help:

CHECKLIST

1 - has the person had the same feedback before? if yes:
• why are you telling them again?
• are you going to give the feedback differently?

2 - can the person do anything about it?
• do they have the authority?
• is it more deep-rooted?
• can they change?
• can you help?

3 - is it the right time?
• are you prepared?
• is the other person prepared?
• has an opportunity presented itself?

4 - tell the person how you feel and how their behaviour/performance affects others.

5 - tell them about the change you desire

6 - listen to their response

7 - acknowledge their response, but emphasise the need to change

8 - be prepared to repeat steps 4 and 5.
