CHECKLIST

• use the feedback sandwich, positive, negative, positive.
• aim for a friendly, supportive atmosphere.
• ask how things are going? Are there any problems? It will be easier to reach agreement if the other person is happy to talk through the issues.
• be descriptive, not judgmental. Explain the problem and why it is important so the other person understands why it matters.
• be specific and give examples. Focus on behaviour rather than personality.
• look for ways forward. Ask for suggestions. Agree goals and targets (SMARTER).
• agree what action you will both do next and end on a positive and encouraging note.
• discuss any development needs.
• allow the other person to respond and actively listen to what they say.
