Good communicators, then, use plain and direct language, but also adapt the message to the audience. If everyone has specialist knowledge in a particular area, for example, your delivery style will probably be different to that you'd use when talking to people from different backgrounds.

The medium you use is also important. A brief memo might be welcomed as an economical way of getting something across, or it might be taken as a sign that you've got no time for, or interest in, what your colleagues think.
It may all sound like a minefield, and to some extent it is. Words are inherently ambiguous, and no one gets their message across clearly and sensitively all the time. But being aware of the pitfalls and bearing some common-sense guidelines in mind should help you keep damaging misunderstandings to a minimum.
