COPING WITH RESISTANCE - THE BENEFITS

Just as change is a natural part of life, resistance is a natural human response! It can serve a useful purpose, providing an outlet for people's concerns. However openness and a sympathetic ear are helpful.

The way resistance manifests itself will depend on individual personalities, what happened in the past to them in a similar situation, what they know about the change and their feelings about the situation.

Resistance can take the form of active and open hostility, passive resistance, resignation or indifference. It can be due to self-interest, lack of trust, misunderstanding, conservatism and defensive attitudes. It may also be the result of uncertainty or disagreement about the facts, or of different assessments of the benefits of change. Whatever its cause, resistance always needs to be understood and taken seriously.

Change is an emotional issue, with people often required to abandon the habits of a lifetime. Often it's trivial details that cause the most trouble moving someone to a new desk, or adding an extra responsibility that won't take more than five minutes a day.

People don't resist change that they themselves want to make, so it's vital to make sure individuals feel valued and are actively involved. Show them how the change will benefit them.
